Kane Williamson has already retired from T20I cricket. However, he remains active in ODI and Test cricket. Despite this, he will not be a part of the ODI series in India. The reason for Williamson’s absence is his casual contract, which he signed with New Zealand Cricket (NZC). Under this contract, the 35-year-old veteran batsman has the freedom to choose tournaments and series of his choice.
Kane Williamson will not play against India in the series
The ODI series between India and New Zealand directly clashes with the fourth season of the SA20 League, which is scheduled to begin on December 26. Williamson will be playing for the Durban Super Giants in SA20. This is why Kane will not play in the ODI series in India. This isn’t the first time Williamson has prioritized a T20 league over the national team. He previously missed the Test series against Zimbabwe and the T20I tri-series that preceded it. During that time, he played for Middlesex in England, playing in the T20 Blast, County Championship, and The Hundred.
New Zealand has selected a new and young team for the tour of India, giving the ODI format a lower priority for the time being. Regular captain Mitchell Santner has been rested due to a groin injury to ensure he is fully fit for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Star fast bowler Matt Henry is also out of the ODI series as he recovers from a calf injury.
Furthermore, Nathan Smith, William O’Rourke, and Blair Tickner have been omitted due to side, back, and shoulder injuries, respectively. Wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham will also miss the India tour due to the birth of his third child. Under these circumstances, New Zealand has included Jaden Lennox in the ODI squad for the first time, while uncapped players like Christian Clarke, Aditya Ashok, and Josh Clarkson have also been given opportunities.
New Zealand ODI squad for India tour: Michael Bracewell (captain), Aditya Ashok, Kristian Clarke, Josh Clarkson, Devon Conway, Jack Foulkes, Mitch Hey (wicketkeeper), Kyle Jamieson, Nick Kelly, Jayden Lennox, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Glenn Phillips, Michael Ray, Will Young.
